Metallica fans will be ecstatic with the song selection, because all of the big names are there, including nearly all of the excellent Master Of Puppets album. While the minor additions all add positively to the experience, the game's biggest strength will also be the main reason many people will avoid it - the soundtrack. The battle mode also features a few Metallica themed moves such as the fade to black, which blackens out the opponent's note track. The band has also done a great job doing the motion capture, and the animations and attention to detail of the on-screen band is beginning to rival Rock Band.

Another nice touch is the ability to view tour photographs of the band, as well as original music sheets for songs and full lyrics for each number. These can be anything from where the title for the song came from to who wrote parts and rifts for it. Choosing to view the Metallifacts plays the song alongside a number of tidbits of information at the bottom of the screen. Finishing most songs will unlock extras for that particular number, such as live videos and Metallifacts. The presentation has also seen some welcome additions that make the game slightly more immersive. This is quite a nice experimental feature that gives players the option to be creative with existing numbers. The drums also benefit from a 'drum over' mode, which once unlocked allows players to delete the current drum track and make up their own version. Pedals can be purchased individually for the title and plugged in to the drum kit, but as the name suggests, Expert+ is for the hardcore only, and playing with two kick pedals makes the drumming insanely difficult, but very rewarding if you can master it. Expert+ hasn't been added simply to punish players, but, by introducing another foot pedal, to make the drumming feel more like the genuine Metallica experience.

Expert+ is a new level of difficulty for the drums that has been included on many of Metallica's songs. While the core gameplay has largely been left untouched, there are a couple of additions that make the game feel more authentic, and in the case of the drumming, a hell of a lot more difficult.

It's all very simple and long-time fans will feel right at home, while newcomers are helped with a series of tutorials that have unfortunately been recycled from World Tour, which is a shame because it would have been nice to get singing lessons from James Hetfield, or drumming tips from Lars Ulrich. The aim of the game is to play the correctly coloured notes as they make their way towards the bottom of the computer screen, while vocalists must match the pitch and length of the words that appear either statically or scrolling at the top of the screen. Once again there is the option to play guitar, drums and vocals individually, or together with other players as a complete band.

In terms of gameplay the core mechanic remains the same as Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band. With this is mind, it's nice to see that with Metallica's game, Neversoft has really pushed the boat out and added new features and touches to make this feel like less of a spinoff and more of a genuine offering to the series. Aerosmith's title was a bit short, missing many contemporary numbers and making no improvements to a slightly stale formula, while AC/DC's Rock Band offering played like a dream but had no frills or extras and came off like a glorified download. Unfortunately, the standard of these band-specific offerings has so far been pretty poor. Aerosmith have their own Guitar Hero title, AC/DC had a go on Rock Band and The Beatles and Van Halen are among the bands soon to be immortalised with their own rhythm action games. It was inevitable from the moment real songs and real bands began to appear in titles such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band that we'd end up with games like Guitar Hero: Metallica.
